A very good question and distinction. I am both a professional counselor/therapist and a life coach. Many people either assume they are the same or have misconceptions about the difference. Actually, there is a great difference and it has to do with the focus and goal of the sessions. Counseling focuses on a person's problems and conflicts past or present that interfere with some aspect of their lives. Life Coaching focuses on training, planning, accountability on personal present and future goals. The difference is basically treatment vs. prevention. While treatment is necessary and unavoidable at times, prevention is the best self care.
